Guarantor of Services of General Interest (SGI)

"Daseinsvorsorge" is – the collective term established in the German society for the municipality's economic, social and cultural services. In English it is called: Services of General Interest.
Numerous municipal institutions, authorities and enterprises are in action every day to keep the wheels of a big city turning. In addition to the traditional public services such as the provision of electricity and water, and sewage and refuse disposal, including road cleaning, these various bodies are responsible for public transport, housing, hospitals, homes for theelderly and many other services. Services of General Interest
For citizens, SGI means - the guarantee that their wastes are reused or treated professionally. The AWM is not allowed to realise profit. For this reason, it does not aim at realising a profit with its services, but instead offers them equally for each Munich resident.
The basis for SGI is endangered
Political and economic groups are working towards strengthening large private companies. With various laws, the EU wants to restrict the rights of the local authorities and transfer municipal duties to private industry. The services offered by local authorities must then shrink to a minimum.
The results of such privatisation
Results are - decreasing of jobs by a social Munich employer; the increasing financial and technical dependence of Munich and its citizens on private industry monopolies; the city’s growing obligation to control the compliance with the laws.
The future for SGI
The City of Munich must still be allowed to decide independently how and to what extent it will be a duty for its citizens.
