The Contribution of Munich's Waste Management Corporation to Climate Protection

The 1989 implemented hierarchy of Munich's Waste Management Concept is similar to the hierarchy of the new EU-Waste directive. Since 1989 the AWM raised the amount of recyclables to several thousand tonnes per year. About 300,000 t of residual waste, 100,000 t of paper and cardboard, 40,000 t of organic waste, 26,000 t of glass, 23,000 t of wood and 14,000 t of garden waste is collected and recycled in the City of Munich.

Climate Protection

Thanks to this increase in separate collection and processing, to waste avoidance and more efficient waste treatment and disposal methods, it has been possible to make great progress in reducing environmental burdens. Successes have also been achieved concerning climate protection, as it has been possible to avoid direct greenhouse gas emissions and reduce consumption of fossil fuels. As a contribution to the current debate about Climate Change, the Waste Management Corporation of Munich AWM entrusted the bifa Environmental Institute Augsburg with the analysis of the climate effects of Munich’s waste management within the last 10 years. The analysis includes different scenarios. The first shows the effects of waste management limited to the municipal area of Munich, the second one shows the effect of a capacity utilisation in the municipal waste incinerator which is the realistic situation.

The implementation of the waste management concept contributed to a reduction of 1.25 million tons of CO2 within 10 years.
