1891

On 14th April the first Munich waste bylaws take effect, a milestone in municipal hygiene.

1891

Blacksmith Fischer develops the 1-horse-powered "Harritschwagen", the backbone of waste collection for the next 50 years.

1947

On 29th April, the city council decides to motorize waste collection.

1961

Establishment of the first four bulky waste collection points.

1964

On 16th June, the first incineration plant, the Munich North Power Plant, starts operation.

1975

The first waste management concept is adopted - waste incineration is the motto.

1987

In April, opening of the North-West Landfill, today a part of the Freimann Waste Disposal Area, with free capacity for decades to come.

1988

A new waste management concept sets new priorities: avoid, reuse, incinerate, deposit.

1997

The amount of residual waste is cut in half within 10 years.

1999

In July, the establishment of the 3 - bin system is completed throughout the entire area. The revised waste management concept is introduced to the public.

2002

As of January, the Office of Waste Management becomes a municipal public business entity and is now called the Waste Management Corporation Munich (Abfallwirtschaftsbetrieb München, or AWM).

2005

A modified fee structure means more favourable rates for 80 percent of the customers and the 80 - liter residual waste bin for those with little waste material.

2007

The waste fee is reduced because of the economical suceess of the AWM.

2008

The new dry fermentation plant of the AWM is officially dedictated. This plant has a capacity to produce 1,8 Million cubic meters of biogas out of 25.000 t organic waste.
